There are many, many great arguments for giving up meat and becoming a vegetarian. For example, eating more vegetables is good for you, is better for the environment, and prevents murdering animals for their meat. Actually, those are the only arguments, but they are still pretty good arguments.
I’ve managed to suppress these thoughts for decades of my life because let’s face it: meat is delicious. There are few things in this world that can make a man happier than biting into a juicy, well-seasoned burger or a pound of steak that has been grilled to perfection. I’ve been eating meat my whole life, and I didn’t think anything would change that, until I saw the documentary What the Health. This movie blew my mind and changed my view of the world completely.
I’m about to discuss the plot of this movie, so if you haven’t seen it yet, please know that there will be spoilers ahead. I recommend you skip the next section if you want to see this movie spoiler-free but want to continue reading this article. You have been warned.
***WARNING: ENTERING SPOILER ZONE***
What the Health is a documentary about a guy who discovers that meat is the root of all evil and everybody should only eat fruits and vegetables forever.
***END OF SPOILER ZONE***
I was deeply affected by this movie, and I decided that it was time for me to make a change in my life, too. I resolved to give up meat and join the millions of people worldwide who proudly inform everyone they meet that they do not eat meat and are therefore better people. The journey would be a long one, but I knew I would have to at least try it to become a healthier and better person. The results of my trial run as a vegetarian are below.
Day 1
A common saying among vegetarians is, “The first day of being a vegetarian is the hardest. Oh, excuse me, waiter? Do you have a vegetarian version of this dish? I’m a vegetarian and cannot take no for an answer, or else I will literally starve to death, and also I’m gluten-intolerant,” and boy, are those vegetarians right! Giving up meat, especially for people like me who have led an exceptionally unexciting life, is truly difficult. I contemplated this as I bit into a piece of delicious bacon, putting an end to the experiment.
Conclusion
As I’ve made abundantly clear in this article, I love love love love meat. But I have also proven that with enough resolve, even a meatatarian like me can go without eating meat for a considerable amount of time and still be okay. In the 45 minutes I spent as a vegetarian, I learned that it’s really not so bad being a vegetarian and that maybe, just maybe, the world would be a better place if more people followed the path of vegetarianism.
